I will lock eyes with the One who has chosen me

Ok, so for those of you that don’t know me, I’m Pete, I thought that perhaps I should start a semi-frequent blog/email to share some of my musings, deliberations, reflections and struggles with worship as and when I experience them.

In the interest of starting this blog honestly, I’ve often gone through times of being a rubbish Christian. I’ve heard countless sermons on reading my bible, praying and spending time with God but my desire and dedication to these things has so frequently been up and down like a yo-yo.

To be honest, until recently, I don’t think I’ve ever properly taken God at his word. The bible challenges us to ‘seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness1’, and that ‘faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ2’, but all too often I get to a difficult patch and I see that my daily time with God is falling rapidly down my list of priorities. Don’t get me wrong, my faith in who Jesus is and what He has done for me has never wavered, just my attitude and response towards Him.

So, if you think that the person standing at the front of church and leading worship has this thing 100% worked out then you are mistaken. I’ve got hundreds of unanswered questions, and a bucket full of prayers where I just don’t know what God is doing.

Recently I’ve been talking to so many people who think that church is a place full of people who have everything ‘sorted’. This makes me so sad, and so I hope that by telling you that I’m definitely NOT ‘sorted’ you can be encouraged that this ‘Christianity thing’ is one long journey, and one that we travel together.

I hope that this is an honest enough beginning for you, but if you don’t really want to read about someone on a journey, and who has regular highs and lows with God, then this probably isn’t for you!

Ok so a bit about me in case you don’t already know… I’ve loved being a part of St Johns in Burscough for almost 20 years now, and you’ve been putting up with me banging drums, playing dodgy notes and singing the wrong words in the music team for more than 10 years – thank you!

To tell you the truth, it has largely been participating in the music teams that has kept me so firmly rooted in church, and through being firmly rooted, I’ve learned more and more about who God is. All throughout this time He has been teaching and re-teaching me about what it means to be a true worshipper of Him. If you’ll allow me, from time to time I’d like to post a few of my experiences on here, and we can explore this thing we call ‘worship’ together.

If there is one thing that I’d like to say on worship in this first post then it is simply this

He loves us and wants to spend time with Him.
He has called us each by name, and has chosen us.
Worship is our opportunity to response to Him
and in worship we are invited to
‘kiss the face of God’.

Yes please, sign me up for that! I’d love to kiss the face of God, to spend time with Him one-on-one would be incredible – that is what He invites us to do each and every time we worship Him we can lock eyes with the One who created us, and I love Him for that.

Songs for the week:

We dance – Bethel

‘I will lock eyes with the One who has chosen me’

[2] – Romans 10:17
