Congregational letter 21/09/14Posted by Richard Jones on 21/09/2014 18:54
Dear friends
As you may already be aware, unfortunately St John’s had lead stolen from the roof on two occasions last week, both during the early hours of the morning. As well as the loss of the lead, damage has been caused to parts of the roof.
As an Anglican church that is also a Grade II* listed building, we are required to follow Diocesan processes and rules, as well as the advice of the church architect, as we seek to effect repairs and improvements to the security of the church with all due speed and care
The appropriate people at the Diocese, as well as our insurance company and the police, were notified immediately. The police have visited and are fully aware of the situation. Temporary repairs have already been made to try and prevent rain coming into the building.
We are now in the process of obtaining formal quotes and recommendations for repair work and security enhancements, and these will be received next week. Subject to PCC decision, these will then be implemented subject to the approval of the Chancellor of the Diocese, who has already been informed of the situation and the work that has been done and is likely to be required.
The forthcoming PCC meeting will be discussing the situation and proposed repairs and improved security measures and will agree a way forward.
Thank you for your prayers for the leadership team and the PCC as we seek to find the best way forward that provides improved security for the church as well as considering cost implications carefully. My particular thanks go to David Orritt, the wardens, treasurer and others who are spending a lot of time resolving this situation.
Please also pray for the perpetrators of these acts, that they may come to know God’s love.
If you have any questions please do contact myself, David or our wardens, Mark and Wendy.
Thank you for prayers and support.
In His Love
Richard
