There is power in the name

When things are going well I pray often, but on reflection those prayers can tend to be a list of pleases and thankyous, and are often just a one way conversation where I have my mouth wide open and my ears wide shut.

This week I have no idea what to think, or what to say, and frequently I have no idea what to pray. When I do pray, I waiver between crying out to God in despair and praying in faith knowing that God is bigger than all these earthly circumstances. If I’m completely honest, I feel like the former whilst trying to convince myself of the latter. I think that this is how God wants us to be when we pray - open, honest, bearing it all for Him to see. He doesn't expect us to feel 'in control'.

I am certain that horrendous circumstances like these are never ever sent from God, but I am also certain that He never wastes a hurt, and he takes every single opportunity to teach us. This week I have learned:
- How fragile life is
- How precious family is
- How big my God is
- How loving my church is
- How to pray

I can’t remember feeling this way before in my short life so far, but its times like this that I am so pleased the bible gives us Gods view on the human condition. It shows us how people respond to hard times in different ways, and it convinces me that it’s always best to lean towards God. It tells us over and over again that there is power in the name of Jesus, we sing about it all the time. Do you believe that it’s actually true?

If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it [John 14:14]

For everyone who calls on His name will be saved [Romans 10:13]

There is none like you, O Lord. You are great and your name is great in might [Jeremiah 10:6]

You will ask the Father in my name [John 16:14]

Let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God that acknowledge his name [Hebrews 13:15]

If you don’t know what to pray this week, then just pray ‘Jesus’. There is power in His name.

Song for the week:
Mention of Your name – Jenn Johnson
