The Fathers Confusion

I'm a Dad in training, and have been for the past 5 years. I don't think I'll ever really know what I'm supposed to be doing. Being a Dad is really just an exercise in making up as you go along.

It is impossible to know what each individual day will have in store, but usually contains an equal mixture of laughter, tears, dirty clothes, baby wipes, cuddles, spilt drinks, bumped heads, grazed knees, and 'I love you Daddy'. I wonder if things will ever calm down a bit? Perhaps, but maybe things will just get more complicated.

The thing about being a Dad is that I want to be there for all of this stuff, to get involved in all of the mess and the mayhem. It's confusing.

My kids know that I love them, but it doesn't stop the chaos. It doesn't stop them making a mess, shouting at each other, or being demanding and ungrateful from time to time. I  think that mirrors my relationship with God much more often than I'd usually like to admit.
My days with God usually contain an equal mixture of laughter, tears, grazed knees. 'I love you Daddy', too many demands, and too much ungratefulness.

I wonder if my actions lead God to feel as confused in His role as 'father' as my kids actions make me feel? I'm guessing not. He's been at this 'Dad' thing a little bit longer than me and he's never let me down yet.

I revisited these two pictures this week having forgotten about them for a little while. They don't show a confused father, they show a fathers embrace. This is the best bit of being a Dad, and is exactly the position that God wants us to adopt when we spend time in His presence.

This Father's Day, I'm going to adopt this position of being held when I'm with God. He want to tell us how much He loves us, we have to make space to let that happen.

"You don't have to do a thing
Just simply be with me
Let those things go, they can wait another minute
Please stay here with me and love on Me a little longer"
