Station Café filled with Christmas cheer

Chilly Christmas shoppers travelling from Burscough Bridge station on Saturday were greeted with friendly faces and some warming Christmas cheer, as the café opened its doors for one morning only to serve up free hot drinks and Christmas nibbles.

The event was provided by the men's 'Fellaship' group from St John the Baptist Church, Burscough, in partnership with the station staff. The station opened up the old café area for volunteers from St John’s to serve out free tea, coffee, hot chocolate and treats including Christmas cake and mince pies. Over 150 passengers were very grateful for the offer of a warming drink in the wet wintery weather, sending them on their way in good spirits to the Christmas markets. The train drivers also welcomed a mince pie for their journey!

Ian Jones, curate at St Johns, said,"In previous years we have done this on a weekday, serving commuters on their way to work in the run up to Christmas. This year we thought we'd have a change and do it on Saturday between 9am and 12:30pm, to bless people going Christmas shopping or on their way to visit friends, family, or football matches.

Wherever they were going, it was all about blessing people in a small way at Christmas time, as a symbol of how God has blessed us all in the biggest way possible by sending us his son Jesus. The train goers were all really friendly and happy to chat, and we hope many of them will come back and visit us at St John's to find out more about the meaning of Christmas. Thanks also once again to the wonderful station staff for their support in helping to make this happen."

The St John's team hope to welcome many of the train travellers to celebrate with them in church over the Christmas period. The regular Sunday services at St John’s church, Burscough Bridge, will include an 11am family Nativity Service and 7pm Contemporary Carols this Sunday 20th December, whilst Christmas Eve worship will include a 4pm Christingle and 11pm Holy Communion.
